HEADS OF CHRIST ROOM
Some people collect old silver, rare old clocks, golf trophies, paper weights or buttons. Dr. Charlie Shedd, noted Presbyterian minister, lecturer and author collected the faces of Jesus.
Dr. Shedd began collecting pictures of Christ when he decided he needed to know more about this Jesus he intended to serve and preach about his entire life. When he found the picture of the laughing Christ he said "I want to remember that face. He hung it in his study so he could look at it as he had his daily Bible study. His private collection grew to include many various depictions of Christ. The faces range from the Man of Sorrows to the confident Christ. They include a Black Christ, an admonishing Christ and the Christ of the Oberammergau Passion Play. They're portrayed in pen and ink, oil, watercolor, photography and sculpture. They've come from Canada, Europe, Mexico and the United States - the work of noted. and obscure artists alike. When Dr. Shedd left Jekyll Island where he was our pastor from1968 to 1976, he donated many of his pictures from his collection to our Church. Since 1976 this collection has grown to include over 110 items. Some of these pictures were made especially for us after a visit by the artist, such as a pen and ink sketch by Jack Stephan, "Christ...Interpretation of a moment."
Jekyll has a committee of three who over-see the collection making certain the room is open to all those who wish to view the pictures. This committee presents the donations to the session that has the final say as to what is included. Many groups have come to visit and spend time with us. If you wish to come during the week we suggest you contact the church office (912-6352123) or Elsie Sederholm, Chair of Heads of Christ Room (912-635-3297) to make certain the room is open when you arrive. Stan and Betsy Stewart are the other members of this committee.
